The 1938 three-act play by American playwright Thornton Wilder.
Set in the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners, it chronicles the effect of daily life on the citizens of Grover’s Corners at the turn of the twentieth century and struggles with issues of eternity. This completely new production attempts to create a work closely in line with Wilder’s vision of a stripped down presentation. Wrestling with the play for the third time, director Tim Hillman is working with an accomplished group of actors to bring to life an Our Town for our times with music for the production composed by Jordan Hillman, a recent Summa Cum Laude graduate of Connecticut College, non-traditional casting, and analytical choices that are sure to spark conversation for weeks after the show. Wilder’s view of his play will be paramount to the performance.
Director Hillman honed his craft in Los Angeles, Boston, and Nashville and founded of Unexpected Company Improv Theater- the group that launched dozens of groups and was the force behond the development of the Providence Improv Festival. Our Town represents the senior Hillman’s one hundredth show as a director, and the first time his directorial work has been seen in fifteen years. Prior to that, his works have been presented to crowds that included dozens of accomplished actors. Sydney Poitier, Joan van Ark, Tim Conway, Alfre Woodard, Hank Azaria, the late Dana Hill and many others were regular attendees, always looking for challenging, evocative, and imaginative takes on the American canon of theater. Swamp Meadow looks forward to welcoming a wide audience for what it knows will be an inspirational and moving evening of theater. You will think, laugh and cry as George and Emily work to live at the turn of the Century.
